In October 2022, he was involved in a severe scooter accident in Bermuda, which led to his withdrawal from the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

The golf community mourned his loss, with players wearing red-and-black ribbons during the final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in his honor. Hundreds attended his funeral in Raleigh, where he was remembered as a caring and thoughtful friend.
