TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR JANIS STOCKHOUSE, LEGENDARY BAND DIRECTOR AND MUSIC EDUCATOR
The community is mourning the loss of Janis Stockhouse, a renowned band director and music educator who dedicated 38 years to shaping the lives of students at Bloomington High School North.
Stockhouse’s illustrious career began with a four-year stint as Band and Choral Director at North Vermillion Jr-Sr High School.
She then joined Bloomington High School North, where she conducted various ensembles, taught AP Music Theory, and served as assistant director for the Cougar Marching Band.
Stockhouse’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. She was a mentor, role model, and inspiration to countless students, many of whom have taken to social media to pay tribute to her legacy.
“Janis was an absolute legend in the world of jazz education; a glass ceiling and patriarchy destroyer; an inspiration to so many,” wrote one admirer. “She literally changed the world for the better.”
Another tribute read: “Janis Stockhouse was an amazingly supportive teacher, a powerhouse for music in this community, and an all-around role model.”
Stockhouse’s passing has left a void in the Bloomington community, but her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and educators.
