Beloved Raptor Biologist Brian Busby Remembered for His Passion and Contributions

The conservation community mourns the loss of Brian Busby, who passed away on December 23, 2024. A dedicated researcher and educator, Brian was deeply involved in advancing the understanding of Ospreys and other raptors, leaving an indelible mark on the field.

Brian earned his undergraduate degree in Conservation Biology from the State University of New York in Syracuse. In 2015, he joined the Raptor View Research Institute under the mentorship of Rob Domenech, where he began his impactful work with birds of prey.

After contributing significantly to raptor research, Brian pursued graduate studies in Raptor Biology at Boise State University. His graduate research focused on Barn Owls, exemplifying his commitment to avian conservation and the advancement of scientific knowledge.

In 2024, Brian returned to Missoula to work full-time with the Raptor View Research Institute. Colleagues and friends admired his extraordinary passion, boundless enthusiasm, and talent for inspiring others. His energy and dedication to his work were described as “breathtaking,” and his ability to share his love for raptors left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Erick Greene, a close colleague, reflected on Brian’s legacy, saying, “Brian left us far too early. Soar with the Ospreys and Eagles, brother.”

Brian’s passing is a profound loss to the conservation and scientific communities, as well as to those fortunate enough to have worked alongside him. His contributions and spirit will be remembered and cherished.
