The Gates Mills and Twinsburg communities are mourning the loss of Matthew Peter Rutkowski, a devoted educator, loving husband and father, and passionate outdoorsman, who passed away unexpectedly on December 27, 2024, at the age of 46. Born on August 28, 1978, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Matthew’s life was defined by service, love, and his enduring commitment to family, education, and community.
A Life Rooted in Education and Service
Matthew spent his formative years in South Russell, Ohio, attending Chagrin Falls schools, where his natural curiosity and love for the environment began to blossom. These traits guided his academic pursuits, leading him to Miami University, John Carroll University, and Cleveland State University, where he prepared for a career that would leave a lasting impact on countless students.
As a guidance counselor at Twinsburg High School, Matthew became a trusted mentor and source of encouragement for students navigating their academic and personal lives. Known for his empathy and dedication, he forged meaningful connections with individuals from all walks of life. Colleagues and students recall him as an unwavering advocate who went beyond academic guidance to provide heartfelt advice and support.
Matthew’s commitment to education extended to his earlier role at ArcTech Academy in South Euclid/Lyndhurst, where he also made a profound difference in the lives of students and staff.
A Devoted Family Man and Community Advocate
For the past eight years, Matthew found joy and fulfillment in Gates Mills, Ohio, his “forever home.” There, he built a life centered on love, nature, and family traditions with his wife, Lyndy, and their daughters, Jade and Rose. Whether planting a wildflower meadow, hiking along the Chagrin River, or sharing evenings by the wood-burning stove, Matthew infused every moment with care and connection.
An active community member, he volunteered regularly at his daughters’ school and played a key role in the Gates Mills Art Show. His passion for the environment, creativity, and hands-on problem-solving made him a beloved presence in the community.
A Multifaceted Life
Matthew’s interests and talents extended far beyond his work and family life. He was an avid outdoorsman, handyman, and Cleveland Browns fan who also had a deep appreciation for literature, music, and world politics. As the owner of Unity Ceremonies, Matthew officiated weddings, bringing joy and meaning to countless couples and earning recognition as Northeast Ohio’s top wedding officiant.
Matthew’s life was enriched by his 20-year marriage to Lyndy, whom he met while working as an outdoor education teacher in Brinkhaven, Ohio. Their shared love of adventure and nature created a life filled with cherished memories and mutual admiration.
A Legacy of Love and Impact
Matthew’s sudden passing has left an immense void in the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, and students. He is survived by his wife, Lyndy; daughters, Jade and Rose; mother, Louise; sister, Jennifer; brothers, Bob (Beth), John (Tina), and Dan (Megan); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter, whose memory he honored throughout his life.
To celebrate his legacy, a memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in the Twinsburg High School auditorium. This gathering will offer an opportunity for the community to reflect on Matthew’s life, which was filled with compassion, dedication, and a love for the people and world around him.
