Tragic Incident; Woman Killed in Explosion at Camilla Tyson Foods Facility

Deadly Explosion at Camilla Tyson Foods Plant Claims One Life, Injures Several

Authorities responded to a devastating explosion at the Tyson Foods plant located at 7220 US 19 near Camilla, Georgia, on Thursday night. The blast triggered a massive fire, causing extensive damage to the facility and resulting in multiple casualties.

Mitchell County Coroner Jamey Thompson confirmed that a woman died in the explosion. However, due to significant debris and structural devastation, recovery teams have been unable to retrieve her remains. “We do have visual confirmation on her, but as far as having access to her, we don’t,” Thompson said. The identity of the deceased woman has not yet been disclosed.

In addition to the fatality, several other individuals sustained injuries, though the exact number of those affected remains unclear. Emergency personnel are working tirelessly to provide medical care and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.

Camilla Fire Chief Jamie Sullivan reported that firefighters extinguished the flames by 2:50 a.m., but crews remain on-site to monitor for potential flare-ups. The explosion and subsequent fire caused a partial collapse of the building, complicating recovery and investigative efforts. Sullivan emphasized the department’s ongoing work to secure the area for responders and investigators.

The explosion reportedly occurred while the woman was present in the facility. Coroner Thompson stated that the cause of the incident is still under investigation and assured the public that updates will be provided as new information becomes available later on Friday.
