Former CMU Quarterback Tommy Lazzaro Dies at 27 in Hunting Accident
Tommy Lazzaro, a former Central Michigan University (CMU) quarterback and standout athlete, has tragically died following a hunting accident. He was 27 years old.
The news was confirmed by CMU sports broadcaster Adam Jaksa, who shared the heartbreaking update on Tuesday night, describing it as a significant loss for the CMU football community.
According to an online obituary, Lazzaro passed away on December 22. Known for his talent and leadership on the field, Lazzaro played four seasons for the Chippewas in Mount Pleasant. He started five games as a junior in 2018 and appeared in 13 games during his senior year. He was a key contributor to the 2019 team that went 8-6 and reached the Mid-American Conference championship game, where they fell to Miami of Ohio.
Before his time at CMU, Lazzaro began his collegiate football career at Dodge City Community College in Kansas. There, he led the Conquistadors to a 9-3 record, tying the program’s record for wins in a single season. Lazzaro threw for 2,237 yards and 14 touchdowns, adding 97 rushing yards and five touchdowns to his impressive stats.
After concluding his football career, Lazzaro pursued a different path, enrolling in the U.S. Army and achieving the rank of sergeant.
A celebration of his life is planned for Saturday in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, as family, friends, and teammates come together to honor his legacy.
